I had a feeling it was those LEDs since in that thread I mentioned someone should do it for the license plate. Well done! You should be able to come up with something to cover it up without much difficulty but right off the top of my head, here's something to try. If you go into an AutoZone or PepBoys they have these clear plastic containers that hold sets of screws/fuses/etc. Find two that look to be about the right size to encase/cover the LED panels and screw/glue them into place. That should do the job without any loss of light and in SoCal they wont get too muddy or dirty. Also, some are beefier plastic than others if memory serves so try to find a good set.
